It was great to see our rice industry take the spotlight on Channel 10’s Planet Shapers in October, a fantastic showcase of the people, partnerships and on-farm innovation driving sustainability across the Riverina and beyond.
The episode featured some familiar SunRice faces and places, including the likes of CEO Paul Serra and Group Director of Sustainability, Kylie Porter sharing how the SunRice Group is working with growers to lead the way in sustainable rice production; CY24 SunRice Grower of the Year, the Small family, explaining how they’re improving water efficiency and soil health on their farm; and Associate Professor Wendy Quayle from Deakin University at Rice Research Australia (RRAPL), showing how gas-flux testing is helping to better understand and reduce methane emissions in rice systems.
The program also captured drill sowing in action, which based on recent trials results is helping growers reduce water use and cut methane emissions by up to 86% compared to aerial sowing, now that’s a win!
It’s a great reminder that progress in sustainability comes from right here - from growers, researchers and local teams working together season after season.
