Heritage Meets Innovation

SunRice Grower of the Year — Michael & Felicia Chalmers

Michael and Felicia Chalmers of Noorong, NSW, are a true example of how family legacy and practical innovation can work hand in hand in modern rice farming.

Building on more than 50 years of experience

Rice has been part of the Chalmers family story for more than 50 years, across three generations. Now in their own phase of the journey, Michael and Felicia have that foundation and steadily adapted the business, introducing new practices that improve water use, soil health and whole-farm efficiency, all while raising a young family of rice growing enthusiasts.

They’ve implemented drill sowing, soil mapping and gridding, and use technology and team-based decision-making to keep improving.

“We’ve recently gone through a growth phase to build the business to be as efficient as possible. We’re constantly making changes and introducing new technologies to lift efficiencies. We’d love to get to a point where work–life balance is in sync, we’re not completely there, but we’re close.” — Felicia

And for the next generation, the pride is already there.

“I love that my family grows rice that feeds thousands of people all over the world.” — Lachie, 12

Productivity and sustainability working together

Their approach balances return and responsibility. Yield improvements are lifting returns per megalitre, costs are carefully managed, and sheep grazing between crops supports rotations and workload. They’re also restoring natural areas on the farm, working with Murray Irrigation and environmental water partners to revive an old creek and billabong. It’s a reminder: being a Grower of the Year is not just about what you yield, but what you nurture.

Backed by collaboration and learning

Participation in Rice Extension programs has helped the Chalmers access trials, agronomic support and tools that support better decisions. Technology such as soil and paddock mapping is used to manage variability and strengthen long-term resilience rather than chase short-term numbers.

SunRice’s Manager of Grower Services and Agronomic Extension, Mark Groat, says:

“The SunRice Grower of the Year Award highlights the achievements of those in the rice industry and demonstrates why Australian rice growers are some of the most efficient in the world. Michael and Felicia’s farm is outstanding in production, profitability and sustainability.”

Looking ahead

Their farm reflects a practical balance between heritage and change, productivity and stewardship. They’re encouraging others to think long-term about soil, water and business resilience, and their approach offers a glimpse of what the future of rice growing in the Riverina may look like.
